Tim Metcalf

I'm a game designer, my main skills are level design, technical design and production. I have experience in whiteboxing, prototyping and production pipelines.

I am eager to learn and grow as a designer therefore, I regularly challenge myself to game jams. I have worked on 20 complete games. Including 2 shipped titles on PC and mobile.

PROJECTS

Scorched Canyon - Level Design

A third person action level with the aim of giving players multiple routes to achieve the objective. The level was created around a design test brief. My own personal goal was to stress test my process particularly in playtesting, I wanted to get a initial whitebox done as quickly as possible so I could playtest.

  • Setting measurable level design goals to foster clear communication within a team.

  • Conducting playtests to determine whether we achieved our design goals.

  • Researching wider game design wisdom through Richard Carrillo’s book The Role Of A Game Designer.

  • Analysing Arkane and other immersive sim level design.

  • Building off the ALS project while adding new features inside Unreal Engine.

Level & World Design Challenge

A self-imposed design challenge, to create a level and a section of the open world in Lego Star Wars TSS. I aimed to design something that could fit into the current game as DLC, therefore attempting to match the game’s design methodology.

  • Successfully creating a design document noting my process, design challenges and research.

  • Researching and analyzing the game in order to identify the original design goals.

  • Building the level and prototyping the gameplay in Unreal Engine.

Puzzle Design Challenge

Another self-imposed design challenge, to create a set of puzzles and a level for the game The Last Campfire by Hello Games. Aiming to design puzzles that could fit coherently into the game.

  • Producing a design document detailing my methodology, while researching and analyzing the game to uncover its original design objectives.

  • Constructing the whitebox for the level and puzzles.

  • Prototyping gameplay mechanics within Unreal Engine.
